Drought impacts Dreketi rice production

Rice farmers in Dreketi, Vanua Levu expect a drop in production as a result of the El Nino effect.

Most farms have dried up and farmers are now depending heavily on irrigation.

Rice farming is the only source of income for almost twenty-five farmers in Dreketi.

Farmers are starting to feel the pinch- their rice paddy has dried up because of almost no rainfall in the last few months.

Farms are being irrigated by water provided by the government for free.

56-year-old Pyara Singh who own about four hundred hectares of rice farms is anticipating losses but is still thankful for governments assistance.

Climate Scientists have predicted drier than normal conditions which are already being felt in most parts of Fiji and is expected to continue until early next year.
