Drivers not following clearway traffic management system: FRA

November 18, 2019 6:34 am

Drivers are still not adhering to the clearway traffic management system introduced in Suva earlier this year.

Fiji Roads Authority Chief Executive Jonathan Moore says the system is designed to address traffic congestion during peak hours, but enforcing it – is now becoming difficult.

“We recognize that it is not operating as efficiently as it should be because people are still stopping. There are two parts to it. We have to get the infrastructure with the signs on the road marks, which are in place now. And then there is the enforcement which is done by LTA and they are enforcing but there is a massive challenge in enforcing these extensive clearways.”

Moore says this is why the Authority delayed the extension of clearways to other parts of Suva.

“We are looking into provisions for Taxi’s, cause that it an issue right now . to make sure that we are not disadvantaging taxi’s unfairly. They do have to drop off and pick up. So hopefully over the next couple of months we can get all those things ironed out and then we”’ go into full swing.”

The Land Transport Authority says Traffic Infringement Notices are being issued to drivers who don’t adhere to the new system.
