Draunibota development concerns

November 5, 2012 4:10 am

A group of residents and supporters calling itself the Bay of Islands Preservation Group is concerned that a sizeable portion of mangroves in Lami will be destroyed if a proposed development goes ahead.

The group met in Lami today and raised concerns about the development led by Pacific Building Solutions.

Residents like Semi Nabogi were unaware of the proposed development until it was highlighted by FBC News about a week ago.

“We are quite surprised to see development worked being carried out at our residence. We have been using these places as sources of food and means of earning a living. By destroying these mangroves, it will be tough on us in terms of getting food or even income.”

Kiji Vukikomoala of the Environment Law Association says proper consultations should take place regarding such developments.

Director Environment, Jope Davetanivalu said he would issue a statement later.

In an earlier statement PBS said it has complied with all statutory requirements and is working actively with the Lands Department regarding securing a foreshore lease.

The company said people can contact PBS to learn more about the development and the positive impact it will have to the surrounding area.
