Drainage improvement to reduce flood risks

Around three thousand Fijians in Lakena and Manoca Nausori will benefit from the drainage improvement project which was commissioned yesterday.

Six kilometers of drain will be desilted in the first phase at Lakena and three point four kilometers at Manoca.

The first phase will cost more than $11, 000.

Minister for Waterways, Dr Mahendra Reddy says the drainage work will reduce the risks of flooding.

“The importance of these area cannot be underscored. We want to get Lakena back up and get into where it was used to be and I think we need to begin with ensuring that we secure them in terms of drainage and flooding and mitigate the issues of flooding.”

Both projects will be completed within a month.

The Ministry of Waterways has been allocated $69 million in the 2018/2019 national budget.
