Minister for Waterways Dr. Mahendra Reddy says he will look into prosecuting those found to be contaminating water sources by use of chemicals.

The matter was raised during his consultative visit to Vusu in Nadroga, where a farmer claims nearby prawn fishers were using chemicals that had consequently affected livestock.

Dr. Reddy says they’ll start dealing with people who are contaminating our waterways.

He says they will undertake the testing of water samples to demonstrate that it is contaminated and when they have evidence, they will look for the people who have contaminated the water.

The Minister says people need to be informed not to trespass other people’s property and if they do otherwise, they will be charged for trespassing and also be charged separately for contaminating water by use of chemicals.

The ministry also plans to set traps in Vusu to curb the prevalence of stray dogs that have also wreaked havoc on livestock.

Dr. Reddy says in two weeks’ time they will set traps so that they are able to eradicate them as much as possible to a level that it doesn’t become a threat to farm animals.
