DPP to appeal acquittal in heroin case

State prosecutors have filed an appeal against the acquittal of Shaheed Khan who was charged with unlawful importation of heroin.

The Lautoka High Court ruled that Khan didn’t have any knowledge of the shipment of 29.9 kilograms of the drug, hidden inside the tyres of a quad-bike.

DPP Christopher Pryde has confirmed the decision to appeal the Lautoka High Court ruling.

The Petition of Appeal was filed in the registry of the Court of Appeal today.

Co-accused Australian national, Ethan Kai, was convicted for one count of Unlawful Importation of Illicit Drugs and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment last month.

The drugs were seized last year.
