DPP rules on charges in death of Berwick

June 25, 2014 5:57 am

The Director of Public Prosecutions Office has ruled that there is no evidence to support claims that 13-year old Sereima Berwick of Tailevu was raped and murdered.

DPP Christopher Pryde says following extensive investigation into the death following an inquest last November and a thorough review of evidence by his office, it is clear that this is a tragic case of suicide.

A statement from Pryde says it is also clear that the findings of the initial police investigation in 2007 that Berwick’s death was a result of suicide were correct.

Pryde commended police for their thoroughness in completing the investigation.

He says allegations that some people may have conspired to pervert the course of justice and fabricate evidence are being investigated and a decision will be made in due course.

Pryde adds this matter serves to remind the public to leave investigations to the proper authorities.

Berwick died in August, 2007.
