Education Minister Rosy Akbar has called on all Members of Parliament not to politicize the education of young Fijians.

Commending the President’s speech in parliament yesterday, Akbar alluded to the importance of teaching students how to operate responsibly online.

Akbar says it’s not okay to cyber bully, manufacture fake news or judge a person’s worth on the number of likes they get on social media.

“Our embrace of the modern education system is unlimited to adapting new technology, it’s also present in the manner we empower our teachers. We continue to work with the Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission to earn more effectively a frame work for promoting human rights within our curriculum.”

The Minister says what some critics describe as freebies in education is a gift to the underprivileged and the less fortunate.

“As has been said that our children are not born with discriminatory notions embedded in their minds. That is a learned behaviour and they take the heed from us adults in their lives. We as adults need to prove to be good role models for all our children.”

Akbar says the ministry is focused on delivering all the priorities of the FijiFirst Government in striving to support every Fijian in meeting their aspirations for education.
