Mobile communications company Digicel has bought Sky Pacific after months of negotiations.

The pay TV service is now a separate entity from previous owners Fiji Television.

Digicel Chief Executive Darren McLean says the company has always had an intention to move into the broadcasting industry.

“This transaction moves us another step closer to Digicel achieving its vision of being a total communications and entertainment provider in this region.”

The sale has been the subject of months of discussions – but Sky Pacific now belongs to Digicel while Fiji TV concentrates on its free to air channel – Fiji One.

Digicel Fiji expects to bring in new channels in due time – there are no disruptions in services expected, nor any hike in subscription fees.

Fiji TV will continue to provide back-up services to Digicel for up to two years, while the new owner sets up its own facilities.
