Diabetes Type One is much more dangerous when compared to Diabetes type two.

Type one diabetes is where the pancreas doesn’t produce any insulin while type 2 is where the pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin or the body’s cells don’t react to insulin.

Young Diabetes Fiji President, Shika Kumar says people are not aware of the effects of Diabetes Type one which has no cure.

“When you are type 2, you can exercise, get your weight down, drink a lot of water so that your weight gets stable. The thing is your body produces insulin in type 2 but it’s just not enough for your weight so once your weight is down and then you will be off meds, and then you can live a normal life, back to the same healthy living. But with type 1 we don’t have that, unfortunately we are not that lucky, we are dependent on insulin and injection.”

Kumar says with diabetes type two, people can help get rid of the disease by controlling their diet.

However, type one diabetes needs frequent insulin supply to keep the immune system normal.

The Young Diabetes Fiji is a non-governmental association working to help those below the ages of thirty to be more aware of the disease and its effects.

They say diabetes Type one increases by twenty percent every year in Fiji.
