Rain from the current tropical depression have caused major landslides around the country affecting hundreds of homes.
USP Lands expert, Paula Raqeukai, says landslides have destroyed houses leaving many people homeless.
“There are two major causes of landslides, one is natural cause which is triggered by earthquake and volcanic eruption and simply the prolonged rainfall activities like what we’re experiencing right now causes the soil to weaken and wash away and the major risk of land slide is that it can happen all of a sudden or very slowly.”
Raqeukai says a landslide picks up speed and is more devastating than a landslip.
