Department of Energy overspent in 2010: Report

The Department of Energy incurred an over expenditure of $33, 649 for the year ended 31st December, 2010.

In its comment to the Auditor General the Department stated that over expenditure was due to a redundancy package payable to Ifereimi Dau the Former Director of Energy and salary payment to Vamarasi Kafoa.

The Department failed to submit its trust account statement of receipts and payments and its main trust fund was also overdrawn by $506, 290.

The Department paid a sum of $334, 850 to a contractor to supply and install two biodiesel processing plants in Lau and Rotuma but no works was carried out by the contractor.

The 2010 Auditor General’s Report tabled in Parliament also found that the Department entered into a Contract Agreement with Powerlite Generators Fiji Limited for the maintenance works on 1, 039 solar homes in Bua, Cakaudrove and Macuata for a sum of $95, 930 for a three year period.

However the maintenance work was not satisfactorily carried out.

The Report also states that the Department did not undertake any biogas digester project in 2010 despite the provision of a budget of $250, 000.
