The 74-year-old father gets life for raping daughter and her child

A 74- year-old man who raped his daughter, impregnated her and later raped the child she had by him, has received the first life imprisonment for rape in Fiji.

The man has been labelled as a demon in the life of the two victims.

The incidents occurred in Rakiraki and Nasinu from 1982 to 2013.

The court heard that the man started to rape his biological daughter when she was ten-years-old while he was 38-year-old at the time in 1982.

He continued raping her until she got pregnant when she was 14-years-old.

High court Judge Justice Daniel Goundar says the victim left the house in 1990 and settled in Nasinu.

The court heard that the man raped his daughter again in her home in Nasinu when her husband was away and during that time she was heavily pregnant.

The man than started raping the second victim, the ten-year-old who was born as a result of his sexual acts on his own biological daughter.

He raped the second victim for 16-years from 1997 to 2013 until she ran away from her house to her mother, his first victim.

The man was charged with seven counts of rape and two counts of sexual assault when he was 73-years-old.

He initially pleaded not guilty to his charges however on the day of the trial he changed his plea to guilty.

Justice Goundar says the man does not deserve leniency as he embarked on a sexual campaign on his own biological daughters adding the act went undetected for 31 years.

The High court Judge says old age is not a license to commit a crime adding that this was not a barrier when he raped the second victim at the age of 69-years.

Justice Goundar notes that the two victims are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and their social and family life has been affected.

The Judge says that for these victims, the demon was their own father who now comes in their dreams.

The man who is now wheel chair bound has been sentenced to life imprisonment with no parole.

A permanent domestic violence restraining order has also been issued by the High court.
