June 28, 2012 5:08 am

An export consignment containing twenty six undeclared gold bars was detained by Customs on Monday afternoon in Suva.

Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority CEO Jitoko Tikolevu says the consignment was being declared under a different name.

He says the gold bars were to be exported by a Suva Company and custom officers moved in after the company representative started acting suspicious.

“First of all they were not declared as gold bars, it was something else being declared and our officers, just through body language, they suspected that something was wrong so they actually did a 100 per cent verification inspection and they found out that it was gold and not what it was declared to be.”

Total weight of the gold bars was 2,385 grams (2.3 kilograms).

Investigations are continuing.
