October 20, 2019 4:55 pm

With only one week left for Diwali, the Consumer Council is urging consumers to be vigilant while doing Diwali shopping.

Council Chief Executive Seema Shandil says traders are taking advantage of the busy periods and indulging unethical market practices.

Shandil is urging Fijians to take a few minutes, check receipts and see if they have been charged the correct prices as per the advertisements or price tag.

“We have seen that a lot of expired products, food items have been placed on the shelves. As I have said people are making purchases or buying things in a rush so they don’t check. So consumers please exercise your responsibility. Whatever you put in your trolley check it twice and check for the due dates.”

Meanwhile, traders are reminded to refrain from selling goods that are not of merchantable quality and to provide appropriate redress in a timely manner for faulty goods sold to consumers.
