Crushing at Lautoka Mill progressing well

Cane crushing at the Lautoka Mill has been progressing well over the past week.

Farmers in Nadi have prepared well for this crushing season and cane supply to the mill has been consistent to date.

Solovi cane farmer, Krishna Rao says maintaining regular cane supply has been the priority for many farmers living around the cane belt areas in Nadi.

“I have already harvested my cane and it’s about 25 trucks which is 3 acres. I have 4 acres left to be harvested in the second or third round.”

Kumar Sami who is also a Nadi cane farmer says despite a few issues, their main priority is to harvest more cane than previous years.

“It’s good that harvesting has started but our gang hasn’t operated because the lack of laborers and this is what we are looking for.”

Meanwhile, some lorry drivers and cane farmers – FBC News spoke with at the Lautoka Mill have said they’re complying with the weight restrictions of 16.5 tonnes.

The Fiji Sugar Corporation says the Lautoka Mill crushed over 1000 tonnes over the weekend and is expected to crush 1600 tonnes today.
