The Acting Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu is calling on Fijians to work with them.

ACP Tudravu says the police can only do so much and a community effort is needed to ensure the safety and security of all Fijians.

Yesterday, a team of officers from the Police Response Unit were deployed to Levuka after officers based at the Levuka Police station were attacked by a group of men who were drinking in the town Saturday night.

Several officers sustained injuries while trying to arrest the men.

“But having deployed all police officers, deployed all manpower and all the vehicles that we have. We still need the support of the community at large. They need to be law abiding citizens in order for us to work together. We cannot be everywhere at all times but we need good citizens of this country to adhere to the law, they uphold the law if all of us can work together in partnership.”

ACP Tudravu also reiterated that they have zero tolerance for assaults on police officers.

Last week, there were several assaults on police officers, one of which included a man wielding an axe and allegedly attacking an officer on duty at a community post.

Other incidents included a police officer been threatened and another physically assaulted while making an arrest.
