Two out of the nine cases recorded by the Social Welfare’s Child Services Department so far this year are physical abuse cases.

Tukutukulevu says all these cases were received by the department mainly from the hospitals.

“When children are taken in hospitals for medical care then doctors find that injury has been inflicted on them. Sometimes parents do this to discipline their children. Other forms of physical abuse is child unsupervised, hurts himself or herself so there are different forms of abuse that children go through.”

Tukutukulevu has urged parents to talk to their children rather than abusing them physically when they do wrong to help reduce these cases.

Meanwhile the Child Services Department has recorded a total of 870 physical abuse cases since 2012.
