More young Fijians suspected of taking illicit drugs

With a new drug trend emerging, more young Fijians are ending up in hospitals for using illicit drugs.

Empower Pacific which provides counseling services says the use of these illicit drugs is becoming a major concern.

Mosese Finau who has been providing counseling for ten-years says the use of these illicit drugs affects people on a large scale.

“Marriage breakdown, separations and divorce on the rise, children performances get affected, absenteeism is one area that is also prevalent, children ending up in hospitals, admitted in hospital, men and women also. We have also received referrals from patients with mental illness, already diagnosed with mental illness, so we than go and support counseling services for them.”

According to the statistics by Empower Pacific, they had received one hundred and forty-four alcohol and drug related cases since 2014.
