There are revelations that five women have died as a result of domestic violence this year.
Fiji Women’s Crisis Center Coordinator, Shamima Ali says violence against women continue to take its toll alleging five died at the hands of their husbands and partners, many others were left seriously injured.
However, Ali believes the work to end violence against women in Fiji achieved several milestones this year despite the ongoing tragedies of women.
She says between January and November, 1510 new clients visited FWCC and its branches in Nadi, Ba, Labasa and Rakiraki.
She adds of the total new cases reported, more than 40% cases were referred to the police.
Majority of these new clients sought counselling for domestic violence.
The FWCC received reports of at least 46 child sexual abuse cases.
Ali adds there is a great need for all agencies and personnel working in the area of eliminating violence, to be on the same page and align with global best practice.
