19 people to front court today over assaults on police

Nineteen people from several separate incidents will front court today charged with allegedly assaulting police officers.

In Levuka, fourteen men alleged to have been involved in the attack against Police officers over the weekend have been charged.

The accused are aged between 20 to 45 years of age and have been charged with various offences such as common nuisance, disobedience of lawful order, serious assault, criminal intimidation and obstructing a police officer.

The 14 are all expected to be produced at the Nausori Magistrates Court later today.

In another incident, three women and two men will be produced at the Nausori Magistrates Court today charged with serious assault after allegedly assaulting police officers on Sunday afternoon.

Four police officers were responding to a report of fight in progress at a shop along Vuci Road when the alleged incident occurred.

The accused were warned to leave the area in which they refused and allegedly confronted and assaulted the police officers.

The first accused a 28-year-old farmer of Savusavu has been charged with one count of disobedience of lawful order, one count of serious assault, three counts of damaging property and one count of resisting arrest.

The second accused is a 24-year-old farmer of Vusuya, the third accused a 26-year-old hairdresser of Kuku village, fourth accused a 20-year-old woman and fifth accused a 43-year-old bar tender of Narere have all been charged with one count of disobedience of lawful order and one count each of serious assault.

All five will be produced at the Nausori Magistrates Court today.
