Hotel workers expected to drop in the coming months

Hotel workers in the 10 pacific countries under the South Pacific Tourism Organization is expected to drop drastically

The number of hotel workers under the South Pacific Tourism Organization is expected to drop drastically in the coming months due to COVID-19.

SPTO says currently there are 131, 000 workers in 10 Pacific countries.

SPTO has been experiencing the effect of COVID-19 for the past few days.

This as there has been border restrictions imposed by most countries that we normally receive most of our visitors from.

SPTO Chief Executive Christopher Cocker says the industry generated US$3.8 billion revenue in 2018 and they are expecting low earnings this year.

“That translates showing the tourism industry is providing 11% for the region’s GDP and employing around 131, 000 people directly employed by the Tourism sector. So whatever is going to happen now that will change”.

Cocker adds the current pandemic will also halt Fiji’s tourism forecast of a 3.3 percent growth from this year until 2024.
