Three appear in high court for alleged police brutality

Three police constables charged for their alleged involvement in a case of police brutality in Navua appeared in the Suva High Court today.

Benedito Bolabiu, Laisenia Ratuvabea, and Lasaro Turagadrau face one count each of act intended to cause grievous harm.

Prosecutors informed the court they need more time to file information and disclosures.

They will be relying only on the caution interview of the accused during trial.

Defense stated that they wanted the case to be transferred to the Magistrates Court.

It is alleged that on November 14th, in Navua the officers used force during the arrest, and assault in the course of the interrogation of a suspect.

It is alleged that due to this the suspect sustained fractures on his ribs and a hairline fracture on his right ankle.

The case will be recalled on 6th February next year.

Bail has been extended for all accused.
