Seven who escaped prison last year appears in court

The seven serving prisoners who escaped from the Naboro Maximum Security Complex in Naboro last month appeared in court today.

All escapees have been jointly charged for damaging property and escape from lawful custody.

Ulaiasi Qalomai, Filipe Delana, Peniasi Qalibau, Bainivalu Tuimatavesi, Josaia Usumaki, Solomoni Qurai and Mesulame Waqabaca escaped in the early hours of the morning on Christmas Eve.

Qalomai, Delana, Qalibau and Tuimatavesi are serving time for aggravated robbery, Usumaki is serving time for burglary and larceny while Qurai and Waqabaca are serving time for murder.

Qurai and Usamaki had also escaped from prison in 2012 and were involved in a theft at the BSP Samabula Branch where $70,000 was stolen.

All the escapees were recaptured within 24 hours.

In court today, the police prosecutor Raymond Filipe has filed the consolidated charges for the accused persons.
Delana, Waqabaca and Usumaki have waived right to counsel.

Whereas Qalomai, Tuimatavesi and Qurai have opted for Legal Aid representation.

Qalibau has opted to engage a private counsel.

The case has been adjourned to February 4th.
