Qi Yong denied bail for alleged murder

A 43-year-old Chinese national charged with murder has been denied bail by the Suva Magistrates Court.

Wang Qi Yong is alleged to have caused the death of a 33-year-old Asian woman.

The Magistrate denied bail on the grounds that murder is a serious offence and that Yong carries a Chinese passport and may abscond.

In court, Police Prosecutor served full disclosures and made an application for the matter to be transferred to the High Court.

The Magistrate noted that murder is an indictable offence and transferred the matter.

The Court has also given Yong 21 days to file an alibi notice to the High Court.

Yong through his Mandarin translator opted for private legal representation.

The alleged murder is believed to have occurred on the 13th of this month at the victim’s home in Namadi Heights, Suva.

The woman was found dead in her room by her flat-mate.

The matter has been adjourned to the 4th of next month.
