Police officers charged with assault granted bail

Benedito Bolabiu, Laisenia Ratuvabea, and Lasaro Turagadrau appeared before the Suva Magistrates Court this afternoon.

Three police constables charged for their alleged involvement in police brutality in Navua have been granted bail.

Benedito Bolabiu, Laisenia Ratuvabea, and Lasaro Turagadrau appeared before the Suva Magistrates Court this afternoon.

The three face one count each of act intended to cause grievous harm.

The three have been bailed on a $1000 bail bond.

The three have been ordered not to re-offend, not to change residential address and to report to Navua Police Station on Saturdays.

It is alleged that on November 14th, in Navua the officers used force during the arrest, and assault in the course of the interrogation of the suspect.

It is alleged that due to this the suspect sustained fractures on his ribs and a hairline fracture on his right ankle.

Meanwhile, the case has been transferred to the Chief Magistrate and will be called tomorrow morning.
