Former Fiji 7s player Amenoni Nasilasila has been convicted of rape by the Lautoka High Court.

This after Judge Justice Daniel Goundar overturned the assessors’ not guilty opinion during his judgment this morning.

Justice Goundar stated the complainant was honest, a credible witness and her evidence was consistent.

Justice Goundar says the complainant was consistent with her account that the accused forced her to have sex.

He says the prosecution also proved their case beyond a reasonable doubt.

He further stated in his judgment that defence witness Isake Katonibau’s story did not add up when the victim had informed him that she consented to have sexual intercourse with the accused and that she be taken to the Sigatoka Police Station to withdraw the report.

Justice Goundar said Katonibau’s failure to inform Police about what the victim told him supports her account that he was putting pressure on her to withdraw the report.

He has given the defence and prosecution time to file their submissions.

26-year-old Nasilasila raped a 24-year-old woman in Olosara, Sigatoka on December 22nd last year.

Nasilasila has been further remanded and his sentence hearing will be held on the 21st of next month.
