A man who brutally raped and threatened to kill his former girlfriend two years ago has been sentenced to 11 years and 15 days.

The 40-year-old man raped the victim on two occasions in 2017.

The victim was a foreign national who came to Fiji to set up a business with the accused in 2015.

The two shortly developed a relationship which lasted for only four months ending in 2016.

The court heard that the rapist was not satisfied with the breakup and became bitter so in March, 2017, under false pretences convinced the victim to go for a drive with him as he wanted to talk.

However, when the woman got into the car, he assaulted her – punching her face, stomach, head, arms and back several times.

Attempts by the victim to escape from the man’s devious intentions were unsuccessful.

The accused then dragged the victim to his house, tied her up and took pictures whilst removing the woman’s clothes before raping her.

The man threatened the victim he would teach her a lesson by killing and decapitating her before putting her body in a sack and dump it in the ocean.

The victim managed to convince the man she wasn’t going to tell anyone about the incident adding that she would leave the country immediately.

However, she informed her mother a few days after the incident where a police report was lodged before she was medically examined.

In sentencing, the Judge said the man took advantage of the victim as she was alone and vulnerable.

The court noted that the victim suffered a great deal of prolonged violence, humiliation, degradation, breach of trust and emotional impact.

The man will be eligible for parole after serving a term of 10 years.
