Man cops 10 years and 11 months for rape

A Suva man convicted of one count of rape has been sentenced to ten years and eleven months imprisonment.

The court heard that the 20-year-old on May 8th, 2012 raped an 11-year-old girl.

The court heard that the girl was returning home after visiting her grandmother when the man lured her inside the house and raped her in front of three youths.

The court also heard that the two knew each other.

While sentencing the man, the Suva High Court Judge stated that Rape is one of the most humiliating and distressing crimes.

He said this form of sexual exploitation of children by the known adult is a serious offence.

A non-parole period of six years and eleven months has been set aside.
