Ratu Semi Kabakaba Degei

A 30-year-old farmer who is charged with manslaughter appeared before the Suva High Court yesterday.

Ratu Semi Kabakaba Degei is alleged to have caused the death of a 30-year-old man in Nakasi in August last year and pleaded guilty to his charges.

Ratu Semi is charged with one count each of manslaughter, dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm and drinking and driving.

The accident occurred at around 7am on August 24th at the junction of Vavalagi Road in Nakasi – when the accused who is alleged to have been driving under the influence of alcohol hit the victim who was walking with a 26-year-old co-worker.

In court, defense counsel sought time to adjourn the sentencing hearing which was scheduled yesterday because the accused will be presenting character witnesses.

The State informed the court that they will be presenting two witnesses including a family member of the decease.

Bail has been extended and the matter will be called on March 22nd.
