Driver involved in fatal accident remanded

A 54-year-old driver involved in an accident in Suva over the weekend has been remanded in custody by the Suva Magistrates court in the last hour.

Pio Ratuwaqa is charged with one count of manslaughter and one count of driving whilst there was a concentration of alcohol beyond the excess limit present in his blood.

Ratuwaqa was granted bail for the second count, however, he has been remanded for the charge of manslaughter.

The accident occurred along Nasese in Suva on early Saturday morning where Ratuwaqa allegedly lost control of the vehicle causing it to veer off the road at Gardiner Place.

A team from the Totogo Police Station managed to rescue the driver and the passenger from the vehicle which was partially submerged in water.

The passenger was rushed to the CWM Hospital and was pronounced dead on arrival.

Ratuwaqa will be produced in court again on Wednesday.
