A police officer who raped his neighbour has been sentenced to eight years and six months imprisonment.

The 34-year-old was convicted of one count of rape by the Lautoka High Court.

In delivering the sentence, High Court Judge Justice Sunil Sharma said the incident took place after the offender asked the victim to lock up her cousin’s home.

Justice Sharma said there was some degree of planning involved in this case and the victim has been having issues with her husband as a result of what had happened.

The High Court Judge said the offender breached the trust of the victim.

He also said that the offender was married with five children and his wife is pregnant with their sixth child.

Justice Sharma adds that the officer is the sole breadwinner of his family and he also holds a reputable position in his church.

The man will be eligible for parole after serving seven years and six months behind bars.
