Chand awaits sentencing

A 40-year-old man of Nausori who was charged with one count of attempted murder of his wife Irene Lata has been found guilty for the offence of assault causing actual bodily harm.

Rakesh Chand on June, 26th 2018 attempted to murder his wife, Irene Lata, held a pillow and pressed on her face at their home in Nausori.

After five days of trial, the assessors unanimously found Chand not guilty of attempted murder but guilty to the offence of assault causing actual bodily harm.

In court today, the Judge agreed with the assessor’s opinion and convicted Chand for the offence of assault causing bodily harm.

The court heard the couple were living like a normal couple and they had lots of bitterness amongst themselves.

Chand went to New Zealand and worked there for two years and when he returned, he suspected his wife was having an affair.

The accused has been married to the complainant for 25 years and survived by 3 daughters.

Chand will await sentencing.
