74 employers taken to court for outstanding FNPF contributions

The Fiji National Provident Fund recovered $1.7 million in outstanding contributions through legal proceedings last year.

This was revealed in the FNPF Annual report 2018 which was tabled in parliament this week.

According to the report, 52 employer’s cases were registered in the criminal jurisdiction with Magistrates Courts around Fiji during the year.

The total debt for all prosecution cases in court was $1.34 million.

The report states that the cases prosecuted were failing to pay contributions for workers, failing to produce documents on demand, giving false or misleading statements to FNPF and deduction of 8% from workers without remittance to FNPF.

At the close of the year, 74 court cases which included some new cases were completed and through this, the fund managed to recover over $1million.

A total of 17 cases have been initiated against company directors and business owners amounting to about $450,000 for unpaid contributions.
