19-year-old cops prison sentence for burglary

The offense of burglary is one of the dangerous forms of property crimes as the offender can create fear and insecurity among people.

Suva High court Judge Justice Thushara Rajasinghe highlighted this while sentencing a 19-year-old man convicted of one count of burglary and one count of theft.

The court heard that on 19th January Jayden Singh entered into a house in Suva and stole assorted items valued over more than $500.

Singh pleaded guilty to the charges.

Justice Rajasinghe said that in this case, the man entered into the house of the complainant at night when the occupants were sleeping.

The High court Judge also said burglars invade into the space of others freedom to steal from them.

While considering Singh’s age, family circumstances and opportunities for rehabilitation, he has been sentenced to 18 months imprisonment.

However, after considering the time spent in remand, Singh will have to serve 17 months sentence.
