A 19 year old teenager has been sentenced to two years imprisonment for setting fire to his parent’s house and a neighbour’s house last year.

Livai Ravunu of Suva came home drunk last December and became angry because dinner was not prepared.

In his anger he fought with his father and forced his parents to leave the home and sleep elsewhere that evening.

He then torched their house and the fire spread to the neighbour’s house.

Judge Justice Salesi Temo while sentencing the teenager said, the court will give him a custodial sentence to teach him to respect his parents.

Justice Temo said the youth had shown utter disrespect to the people who brought him into this world and looked after him.

The judge further said this sentence is a warning to teenagers who show disrespect to their parents.

Ravunu who pleaded guilty to arson must serve a minimum of one year 6 months before parole.
