More than 25 counselors from Pacific Island countries are participating in a gender based violence course in Navua.

Fiji Women’s Crisis Center Coordinator, Shamima Ali says the course is aimed to strengthen the quality of counselling services provided for victims of gender based violence.

Ali says they’re looking at having a cadre of counselors who are well versed on the issues of violence against women after the two weeks course.

She adds it’s also important to understand the cultural context in which the violence happens.

“We with the UN Women are facilitating around 30 women around the region from 10 countries in the Pacific region and these are mostly women who are already running centers or are about to setup their own and also some government personnel’s”

She says this is the first step in getting such training certified and recognized in the Pacific.
