The Consumer Council has welcomed the move by three telecommunication companies to absorb the data levy of 10 cents for every gigabyte used.

The companies are Telecom Fiji Limited, Vodafone Fiji, and Digicel

Council Chief Executive, Seema Shandil says this is good news for internet users as they will not face the trickle-down effect of the new levy.

Shandil also commended the efforts of the service providers who have also committed to ensuring the burden of paying the levy is not passed on to consumers.

She has encouraged other Internet Service Providers to ensure the same.

The levy was passed in Parliament last Thursday.
