Correction officers are vital to shape the lives of inmates

Corrections Officers play a crucial role in shaping the lives of inmates.

Those were the words of Permanent Secretary for Itaukei Affairs Meleti Bainimarama while officiating National Corrections Day at the Naboro Corrections complex yesterday.

Bainimarama urged the corrections officers to continue showing a good example to inmates in every correction facility across the country.

“Times have changed regarding the operations of correction officers in every correction facility. You are role models to inmates and it is important to continue strengthen your moral support for them. These inmate comes from different backgrounds and communities – therefore your understanding will be a key element to deal with them.”

Deputy Commissioner of Corrections Apimeleki Taukei says this annual event started three years ago to acknowledge the services of Correction officers.

“Sometime for us to acknowledge the hardwork that’s being done by Correction officers. So that’s when the idea was conceived and we had all agreed to that and we started off three years ago and this is the third occasion.”

The FCS plans to strengthen this annual event in future.
