The Consumer Council has received a lot of complaints in the past five years against the standard of work carried out by some construction companies.

Chief executive, Premila Kumar, says this is becoming a huge concern.

Kumar says we are in the second month of this year and they have already received complaints worth thousands of dollars.

“This year has just started. We are in the month of February and basically, we’ve completed first week of February and within this six weeks we have received nine complaints worth $28,000 and if we just look at last year, that’s 2017, we received 40 complaints which was worth 1.7 million dollars and If I take the statistics for the last five years, we have got 150 complains worth 3.1 million dollars.”

Kumar claims the companies that are alleged to have done shoddy jobs do not have license and this means they cannot be held accountable.

The Council is working closely with the Construction Industry Council to address this issue.
