Consider welfare of workers: Barr

The Plight and welfare of workers in the country should be seriously considered in the new Constitution says former Chairman of the Wages Council Father Kevin Barr.

In making his submission to the Constitution Commission, Father Barr says this is an important part of economic justice.

Currently, he says, around 60 to 70 percent of permanent workers in Fiji are receiving salaries below the poverty line, contributing to the high rate of poverty in the country.

The workers must be heard, their right must be protected and also their wages must be adequate for them to meet their basic needs

Father Barr recently resigned from the Wages Council over delays in implementing pay increases for workers in low income jobs.
