The Health Ministry has signed up Sahydri Group of Hospitals in India to carry out operations here so patients don’t have to travel half way around the world.

The venture is a first for Fiji as people will get to access to surgeries that will be available at an affordable rate.

DR Charudutt Apte of the Sahydri group of hospital says those in need of operations will not have to travel overseas to get the best health care.

“The show will begin with neuro surgery which is my speciality, cardiac surgery as well as joint surgery. We also anticipate that by mid 2013, we will also be doing kidney transplant and we aim to have all services available and be on par with the international standard.”

Meanwhile Health minister, Dr Neil Sharma says those in need of the service will benefit immensely from the partnership

“The super specialised health care will initially target those in dire need of operations. This service is available to all and through insurance schemes. We anticipate that 60% to 70% of our overseas referrals will be done locally.”

The surgeries are expected begin in mid-September.
