Compensation payout has increased in past 5 years

Last year around 537 people were paid compensation for accidents at the workplace.
The Employment Ministry confirms that the workers compensation payout has increased in past 5 years.
Occupational Health & Safety Director, Tomasi Kama says the highest payout was made in 2017 which was valued at around $3.6million.
Kama says on average the payment is around $2.6m which is the direct costs.
“In 2018 five hundred and thirty-seven cases were paid out as compensation. This included five hundred and twenty-three injury cases and fourteen death cases.”
He says this could increase when indirect cost like transportation is added.
Meanwhile, Employment Minister Parveen Kumar today opened of the 2019 National Conference on Occupational Health and Safety in Lami.
