Commerce Commission to monitor duty reductions

July 1, 2017 7:57 pm

The Fiji Commerce Commission will be playing a key in monitoring the implementation of duty reduction mentioned in the 2017/2018 National Budget.

Government has given the authority to the Commission and Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority to ensure business are not being monopolistic.

Commission Chair, Joel Abraham says too often some companies cheat the people and do not introduce the reductions.

“We had entered into a MOU with the FRCA but there were some limitations as far as confidentiality of information in exchange. Of course we can’t make laws to administer new ones. Thereon we had spoken at length about how we could overcome this and I think this is a very welcomed initiative in this budget.”

The Commission will also work with the Economy Ministry to set up an Economic Intelligence Unit.
