Colombian to be re-tried for alleged cocaine importation

Colombian national Aidan Alec Hurtado whose acquittal for allegedly importing drugs was set aside last year, appeared at the Suva High Court this morning.

Hurtado was found not guilty of importing 20.5kg of cocaine into Fiji without lawful authority however the state had filed an appeal which was granted and a re-trial was ordered.

Judge Justice Achala Wengappuli has ordered that Hurtado be taken for a dental check-up and that a Spanish interpreter be found for the trial.

Defence will call two witnesses who are currently in Colombia.

The trial will be held from May 22nd to June 9th.
