Coast Guard Cutter Mellon focuses on Maritime Surveillance

Maritime surveillance is one of the major focuses of the Coast Guard Cutter Mellon currently berth at the Suva wharf.

Commanding Officer, Stephen Burdian says they will closely collaborate with the Fiji Navy in ensuring that the Fiji waters are free from illegal fishing and maritime terrorism.

“We are looking forward in the coming days to working with Fiji Navy to exercise our bilateral agreement in the area and make sure that we conduct joint operations to ensure that our National Strategies and priorities are maintained”.

The Coast Guard Cutter Mellon currently birthed at the Suva wharf.

Burdian says Cutter Mellon also has resources and equipment to detect illegal activities and has the capability to identify high risk areas.

The vessel has more than 100 crew members who will also be undertaking community service in the next two days at the SPCA and the CWM Hospital’s Children’s Ward and its garden.

The ship will leave our shores on Friday.
