One of the main concerns that is affecting many Pacific Island Countries is the effects of climate change.
During the 70th global celebration of Universal Declaration of Human Rights, President Major General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote says everyone has the right to a safe environment.
Konrote says climatic effects in some parts of the region are jeopardizing the lives of many.
”Major climate related security concerns for the Pacific Islands include access to freshwater, changes in rainfall pattern and sea water intrusion, local food supply, damage to coral reef, declining fisheries and impacts on agriculture and infrastructure damage through rising sea level, flooding, storms and damage."
Konrote says Fiji has been raising concerns at the COP23 meeting but more needs to be done to tackle the issue.
