Civic education vital to constitution making

July 26, 2012 7:03 pm

Civic education will ensure that the new constitution will include the rights of all says former president Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi.

Madraiwiwi was the chief guest at a constitution–making workshop held yesterday by the Citizens Constitutional Forum.

“Constitutions are about how societies organise themselves and order their affairs. They are not per say instruments for achieving economic, social and national well-being although they can help create the environment in which it takes place.”

Meanwhile the Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum says there is more to a Constitution than just ethnicity.

“It was fundamentally premised not to the notion of a common name or removing corruption because politics is not necessarily about ethnicity but about aspects to governance on how it affects people on a day to day basis.”
