Chronic Kidney disease is one of the top ten causes of deaths in Fiji.
Health Minister Rosy Akbar says more than 600 patients develop kidney failure every year.
Akbar says in many cases it has been noted that many patients who suffer from diabetes result into having kidney failures.
“The high out of pocket cost related to accessing treatment but people opt for that. Dialysis is an expensive service to run due to the high cost of machines and its consumables and the technical expertise that is required to run the centers.”
Akbar says the Government through the Ministry will continue to provide aid for those patients who are in need of kidney dialysis treatment.
$3.5 million has been set aside for subsidizing dialysis for patients in the 2018/2019 national budget.
