The Chinese Association of Fiji will be putting in a proposal to Government requesting for a public holiday from next year to be dedicated to the Chinese New Year.

This comes as the Chinese population in the country continues to grow.

Association President Jenny Seeto says similar holidays are celebrated in China and Hong Kong.

“The Chinese community have discussed for a number of years now to approach government and to seek approval to have a public holiday for Chinese New Year. I think the timing is right now to go forward to the government about having an inclusive society, In Fiji, we celebrate all the different festivals and me as a Fijian I do that as well, you know whether its Diwali or some other religious holiday.”

Seeto says this is a good time to approach the government to support or approve a holiday for the coming years.

The Chinese New Year is an important Chinese festival celebrated at the turn of the traditional Chinese calendar.
